Thanks for the comment. You are ...Dear Kariyachan,

Thanks for the comment. You are indeed correct. There are various opinions about the origin of the Coorgis(Kodavas) and the Greek connection is very much discussed.

The following information were interesting:

1. Sri MM Anand Ram has published a book called ;INFLUx - Crete to Kerala' ( Keerthi Publishing House Pvt Ltd , Coimbatore..First edition 1999) in which he has developed a theory that in about 1470 or 1450BC there was a catastrophic volcanic eruption in Mount Akrotari in the Island of Crete as a result of which a large portion of the North West Crete Island sank to the bottom of the sea. Subsequent archaeological studies have shown that the absence of human skeletons indicated that the inhabitants had escaped destruction by fleeing for safety.

He states that the people of Crete and the Minoan island were called Thirayyars meaning navigators. According to Sri Anand Ram, the people of North Malabar were the Cretan or Minoan descendants who were originally known as Thirayyars which gradually came to be pronounced as Thiyyars.

It is possible that some groups of thiyyars left for the Karnataka and found a dwelling in the forest and started plantations and become rich and the original customes are left intact and called them self as Coorgis.........there are lot of cultural and social affinities between thiyyars and Coorgis. http://www.kishorcariappa.com/2007/12/omani-link-for-kodavas.html

2.While the book, A Study of The Origins of Coorgs, by Lt Col Kongetira Chinappa Ponnappa, has not succeeded in pinpointing the roots of Coorgs, it says that they could be descendants of either pre-Muslirn Kurds or pre-Christian Georgians.
Stating that the Coorgs have no similarity to the Dravidian race, the book quotes Sir Erskine Perry who points out: “The Coorgs have no resemblance to any races of South India. By far they are the finest race I had seen in India in point of independent bearing, good looks and all outward signs of well-being.”
Coorgs are a different kind of people as compared to others in the country. They do not celebrate any of the Hindu festivals or follow their customs. Unlike other communities, Brahmins have no role in any of their ceremonies, be it marriage, death or festivals, the book says. Drawing a parallel between the character of Greeks and Coorgs, the book adds, “Like the Greeks, the Coorgs have an instinctive hatred for servility or sycophancy. A Coorg will never show more than the obligatory respect to a man in the higher orders of officialdom unless he positively respects that man.” http://gauthammachaiah.blogspot.com/2008/05/hypothesis-is-that-they-could-be-kurds.html

These studies are quite fascinating, Kariyachan.

I hope you are enjoying the buzz around the Football WC in RSA!

Regards,Murali RamaVarmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08048053577294406031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24444408.post-26819615484102957862010-06-06T23:42:39.257-07:002010-06-06T23:42:39.257-07:00Hi Murali Sir;

Please do visit this magnificient place, which is also known as the poor man's Ootty.

Victoria Gowramma had a daughter by name Edith Victoria Gowramma Campbell.The princess , at 19 had married Col. John Campbell an Indian army officer who was aged 50. Col. Campbell had the eye on the Coorg treasures given to Gowramma by her father Chikka Vira Rajendra.This gambler made the marriage a failure and the unfortunate Gowramma died aged 23 due to tuberculosis. Not much is heard about her daughter Edith or about Campbell afterwards. The whole aspects regarding the crown jewels and the Raja's death are shrouded in mystery. Mr.Belliappa's novel about Victoria Gowramma is quite interesting and gives much details !

Regards,Murali RamaVarmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08048053577294406031noreply@blogger.com
